Yesterday we visited Haapsalu for the great event Haapsalu Shawl Day 2010.
It was absolutely wonderful time there, lot memories, beautiful seaside, lately renovated Kuursaal and lot of beautiful shawls to see and many nice people to meet!
It was nice to see the Masters, meet my teacher, Master Aime Edasi whom I some years ago learn how to love this traditional art and knit Haapsalu shawls namesake.

I had two of my shawls with me in hope to get them photographed and so we did, it was almost evening but still great lights, without sun but wind from sea- just the kind what makes the stay so romantic and brings up the ages of past and shawls and ....
so, this time I let my shawls show you the Haapsalu and it's voyage to ages past!

Paabusall vol.2

Shorter version from Noro Kureyon. (200 gr - 2 skeins).
I just love this yarn because it's feeling like real wool and I also do love its color combination aswell. I think this shawl will be cape after getting some buttons and will do great for my autumn walks, too. All these pictures made in our home county.

Finally something for myself.
I started it at 2009, but had too many projects in progress and also I had no good enough idea for edge lace design.
This shawl is knitted from rayon80%/nylon20% which makes it so fell falling and good to wear. No need blocking and very comfortable. I love Austremann Aura.
More updates soon and if I get moment I make chartpattern available.

I knitted this shawl few months ago but still it is nameless.
Was considered the snowy/winter names but white shawl is beautiful to wear also at summer.

Today I had possibility to have photos and so we did. So perhaps it helps to find some beautiful names to chose from.

Shawl is large, warm, woolly and in semicircular shape.
Much loved feather and fan variation.
Yarn is Estonian 1 ply, compares with Noro Kureyon.
The pattern was written so that I can knit it just as much lot I have yarn.

Thank you all who suggested the names.
I named it Paabusall.
Feather and fan is Vausabakiri in Estonian and vausaba is paabulind :)
I am not able to translate it fully but name suits perfectly.

Lily of The Valley - Pööratud piibelehekiri

Just finished the next traditional Haapsalu Shawl.
The most classical Lily of The Valley and once again this stitch make me want to cast on the new one almost right after previous is finished.

After blocking this pattern truly is most beautiful and I adore it every time.
Hoping to get model photos to present its lightness and structure.

No secret that I like knitted tablelcoths , both on needles and in use on tables :)

DMC 3 ply cotton thread Babylo size 20/12
Fine DMC cotton makes it last long in usage.
Needles US 1½ - 2.5 mm
Weight of tablecloth: 146 gr

About pattern:
Center rectangle is from Burda Kunstricken, one of older issues where from I knitted pillowcover many many years ago. I thought it will make good size tablecloth but seemed to come rather as doily by size. And as I still had 2 balls of yarn left and as I love larger tablelcloths I thought I just continue knitting and will see where to the needles take me, so I did’nt written anything down. So no pattern. But I’ll use this inspirated part of cloth for the shawl, so I soon asp. hope to chart it anyway.

Snowberry Shawl

In estonian: Lumimarja rätik

This shawl is knitted in Estonian traditional shawl technic, except that it is triangular, was started to knit on top of shoulders and that it has not edge lace. So it is rather just Estonian lace shawl. In this pattern the nupps reminded me the Snowberries a lot and so I named my pattern after beautiful white winter berries. It is beautiful song in Estonian "Raagus sõnad" by Marju Kuut which always bring the lumimarjad (snowberries) into my mind as well at day we did the photographs of my shawl. This shawl was designed as gift to a very special and generious person

Ocre Leaf Stola

Knitted lace shawl, leaf pattern version.
This shawl was started because color of yarn- only 30% mohair but still ocre. I want ocre shawl to wear with my brown-ocre jacket. I took pattern from one of my long time ago knitted tablecloth. It is interesting how same pattern in two such a different yarn looks. I believe this stitch pattern is in Pitsilised Koekirjad aswell.

Christmas Star Flower Stola

I got inspired of this red nicely variegated 100% Estonian wool. The stola is very warm.

Pattern 100 rows.

Easy pattern but took almost month because have so many projects in work.
We had snowstorm here yesterday - tons of snow and I already missed to have this woolly shawl on my shoulders when standing on stairs of my home and looking the wind and snowstorm. It was such a Christmas feeling because that lot of snow- beautiful. The colors of this yarn remind the leaves of Christmas flower so much:)

The lace pattern for this shawl is modified from tablecloth Rosenblattdecke published 1992 in Burda Kunststricken E198 Model 198/29.

Yarn: the weight of shawl is 240 gr/8.47 ounces

Haapsalu shawl Master Class

In October I was in 2 day Haapsalu shawl masterclass held in Public University of Tallinn by Aime Edasi.

It was told there is very few traditional shawl masters left and I was hoping to learn the details and descriptions of traditional Haapsalu shawls.
With my knitted lace background it still was very interesting.
There is quite a lot of these details make the Haapsalu shawl namesake, special and different and the details which remove the name of course...
I'll write and post more of this topic later.
Without any of these details presented in shawl it makes it still Estonian lace but not yet a Haapsalu shawl.
After this masterclass I immediately started knit the real Haapsalu shawls and I will sure continue. I understood that years ago I knitted modern ones. Now I am so passioned to take tradition on :)
I have only about 40 cm knitten, but tiny bit every evening and so it goes.
I was choosing the stitch pattern nr 150 from the L. Reimann's Pitsilised Koekirjad and I have not designed the border edge yet, I first want see how the shawl looks and then find stitch pattern for it.

Pitsilised Koekirjad is one and only stitch book ever published with lot of stitch patterns to choose from, these stitches were collected and written down from old shawls and from knitted pattern collections as well from swatches. All the stitches in this book is not Haapsalu shawl stitches, some are just Estonian lace, but beautiful all and each!
There was published the shawl pattern book by Linda Elgas- full on beautiful Haapsalu shawls. Both books out of print and Linda Elgas patternbook is extremely rare.

Finally got scanned some old photos of tablecloths I lace knitted in years 1986-1995.

The quality of photos is quite a poor but I am glad that after all I still have these photos made by those who liked and had laces from me.

This black-white photo is sample of round tablecloth made by me from very fine cotton thread, needles 2mm.

Several of them are by H. Niebling and E.Engeln - I always adored the art of these Great lacemasters!

Two photos below of extremely large tablecloth were one of my favourite patterns. I needed to clean the room from some furniture before I was able to block it :) That large it was;)

And here is one kitchen curtain. It was my own design.

And finally - one rare photo of me :) Pictured in Finnish largest Handicraft Christmas Fair in Helsinki - it was beginning of 90'ies if I remember right. Photo seem to be taken at last day as on photo there is only 2 large laces left and some smaller ones. One I remember for sure is that the fee of place for this fair was quite expensive so I was able to buy only the 70 cm of table length :) I went there also some next years and remembering how very flattered I was by the fact that right at first day , at morning there was two ladies waiting me in hope I'll set up my outlet again so they get some laces made by me for their antics furniture. I have all the nice memories of that time .... What a pity I have no photo of me, knitting one of these larges during this Fair like a workshop, it was so large that I had the basket on the floor where the center of tablecloth was while I was knitting, many people stopped and wondered:)

The reason why I needed brake knitting the lace at middle of 90'ies was that my wrists got so sore and also another reason that I decided to go university and graduate in law, life then got too busy and new challenges and hobbies. I recently found my pattern maps and some middle way knitted laces and it made such a nostalgia! Well, I am back now - in LACE KNITTING, yes, but with some different projects I hope to blog here at future. So welcome to back!

Blue knitted tablecloth

This tablecloth is knitted by me at end of 1980'ies by one of my favorite patterns of Erich Engeln. I did lot and lot of lace knitting then times ago.
It is great to dig out my pattern collections after some 15 years and get a lace fever again!
